El verbo to be en inglés: formas, contracciones, negativa y preguntas

Todas las formas del verbo to be en tablas, there is y there are, y los usos en los que no coincide con ser ni con estar.

Lo esencial

El verbo to be significa «ser» y «estar». En presente tiene tres formas: am (I am), is (he, she, it is) y are (you, we, they are), que en el habla se contraen: I’m, she’s, you’re. La negativa añade not (I’m not, she isn’t, they aren’t) y la pregunta invierte el orden: Are you ready? Is she at home? En pasado, was (I, he, she, it) y were (you, we, they).

  1. La contracción es lo normal al hablar. I’m, she’s, they’re.
My mum’s a teacher. Where’s the bathroom? What’s your name?
Yes, I am. I know where she is. Decir «Yes, I’m» es incorrecto.
  4. ‘s puede ser is o has. She’s tall (is), She’s got a dog (has), He’s been ill (has). Y también el posesivo: Ana’s book.
  5. El sujeto nunca desaparece. «Es tarde» es It’s late; «Es muy bonito», It’s very nice.

Con I solo existe I’m not: no hay «I amn’t». En las coletillas se usa aren’t I?: I’m late, aren’t I?

Preguntas y respuestas cortas

Para preguntar basta con invertir el sujeto y el verbo. be nunca usa do.

Where are you from?¿De dónde eres?

How are you?¿Qué tal estás?

What day is it today?¿Qué día es hoy?

was y were traducen a la vez «era», «fue», «estaba» y «estuvo»: It was cold (hacía frío), The concert was great (el concierto estuvo genial).

I was born in 2012.Nací en 2012.

Were you at home yesterday?¿Estuviste en casa ayer?

We weren’t late.No llegamos tarde.

El resto de tiempos se forma como en cualquier otro verbo: I’ve been to London (present perfect), I’ll be there (futuro), I’m going to be a vet.

There is y there are: el «hay» inglés

There’s a park.Hay un parque.
There are two parks.Hay dos parques.
There isn’t any milk.No hay leche.
There aren’t any shops. No hay tiendas.
Is there a bank near here?¿Hay un banco cerca?
Are there any questions?¿Hay alguna pregunta?
There was a problem.Hubo / Había un problema.
There were a lot of people.Había mucha gente.
There will be a test.Habrá un examen.
  1. Singular e incontables: there is. There’s a cat, There’s some water.
  2. Plural: there are. There are three cats. En el habla informal se oye there’s con plural, pero en clase y por escrito se usa there are.
  3. «Hay que» no es there is. «Hay que estudiar» es You have to study o We need to study.

To be no siempre es ser o estar

  1. Donde el español dice «tener». Edad, sensaciones y algunos estados van con be.
  2. Donde el español dice «hacer». El tiempo atmosférico: It’s cold, It’s sunny.
  3. Donde el español usa otro verbo. Horas, precios, distancias, intereses.
InglésEspañol
I’m twelve (years old).Tengo doce años.
I’m hungry. / I’m thirsty.Tengo hambre. / Tengo sed.
I’m cold. / I’m hot.Tengo frío. / Tengo calor.
I’m sleepy.Tengo sueño.
I’m afraid of spiders.Tengo miedo a las arañas.
I’m right. / You’re wrong.Tengo razón. / Te equivocas.
I’m lucky.Tengo suerte.
I’m in a hurry.Tengo prisa.
It’s cold. / It’s windy.Hace frío. / Hace viento.
It’s five o’clock.Son las cinco.
It’s ten kilometres away.Está a diez kilómetros.
How much is it?¿Cuánto cuesta?
I’m interested in music.Me interesa la música.
I’m good at maths.Se me dan bien las matemáticas.
I’m late.Llego tarde.

Y donde el español distingue ser y estar con el mismo adjetivo, el inglés cambia de adjetivo: He’s boring (es aburrido) frente a He’s bored (está aburrido); She’s ready (está lista) frente a She’s clever (es lista).

Cuidado con I have a cold: significa «estoy resfriado», no «tengo frío».

En clase: to be cada mañana

  1. La clase conjuga be a coro, persona por persona, primero en forma completa y luego contraída: I am, I’m; you are, you’re…
  2. Pregunta del día a un alumno: How are you today? Responde con frase completa: I’m tired, but I’m happy.
  3. Verdadero o falso: di una frase falsa (Madrid is in France.) y la clase corrige a coro: No, it isn’t! It’s in Spain.
  4. Una frase con there is o there are sobre el aula: There are twenty-five students and there’s one teacher.

Adaptar al nivel del grupo

  • A1am, is, are, contracciones y preguntas personales: What’s your name? How old are you? Where are you from?
  • A2was y were, there is/are, there was/were y I was born in…
  • B1be como auxiliar: present continuous (I’m reading) y pasiva (It was built in 1605)
  • B2Estructuras con be: be about to, be supposed to y be used to + -ing (estar acostumbrado a), que no es used to + infinitivo

I’m six. I’m happy!) fijan las tres formas.

  • Calcar «tener años»: «I have twelve years». Correcto: I’m twelve.
  • Calcar «tener hambre, frío…»: «I have hungry», «I have cold». Correcto: I’m hungry. I’m cold.
  • Decir «I am agree».
  • Contraer al final: «Yes, I’m». Correcto: Yes, I am.
  • Omitir el sujeto: «Is very nice», «Is late». Correcto: It’s very nice. It’s late.
  • Preguntar con do: «Do you are Spanish?», «Do you be tired?». Correcto: Are you Spanish? Are you tired?
  • Calcar «hay»: «Have a park in my town», «There is two cinemas». Correcto: There’s a park in my town. There are two cinemas.
  • Olvidar was en «nací»: «I born in 2012». Correcto: I was born in 2012.
  • Confundir boring y bored: «I’m boring» significa «soy aburrido».
  • Concordar mal con people: «People is nice». Correcto: People are nice.
